Making Printmaking Accessible to All

The Open Etching Project is a revolutionary initiative aimed at transforming the traditionally toxic, expensive, and complex art of etching into a safe, affordable, and accessible practice. For over a century, etching has been confined to professional studios due to its reliance on hazardous acids, heavy presses, and intricate processes. This has made it nearly impossible for individuals to practice etching at home or on a small scale.

The project introduces electro-etching, a non-toxic alternative to traditional acid etching, as its cornerstone. By using a low-voltage electrical current to etch metal plates, this method eliminates the need for dangerous chemicals. Building on this innovation, I have designed low-cost, DIY tools—such as portable electro-etching kits and lightweight presses—to replace expensive professional equipment. These tools, combined with alternative materials like recycled plates and water-based inks, make etching accessible to beginners, students, and hobbyists alike.

I have decided to open-source the techniques and designs I’ve developed, allowing anyone to benefit from this discovery. By sharing this knowledge freely, the Open Etching Project empowers more people to explore printmaking safely and affordably, fostering creativity and inclusivity in the art world. This project is not just about innovation—it’s about making art accessible to everyone, everywhere.
